Choose Unrivaled Stability with Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures offer several benefits over traditional dentures. Most importantly, these restorations can keep your jawbone healthy while providing stability and a natural-looking smile. Dr. Ben Ahlbrecht places dental implants at our Indianapolis, IN, office using the latest dental technology, ensuring your treatment is as efficient and comfortable as possible. Once you have healed, we can design and place a completely customized denture.

What is an Implant-Supported Denture?

An implant-supported denture is designed to restore function for patients with extensive tooth loss, including a full arch of teeth in their upper or lower jaw. Rather than the device resting on your gums and using messy adhesives, as with a traditional denture, an implant-supported denture is attached to four or more dental implants. Because the surgically placed posts fuse with your surrounding jawbone tissue, the option provides superior results.

Implant-supported dentures are affixed directly to the jaw bone so they will never slip out of place.

Why Choose an Implant-Supported Denture?

An implant-supported denture provides both aesthetic and health benefits. Not only will you enjoy improved dental function and restored self-confidence, but you be able to maintain the health of your smile for many years. Implant-supported restorations are the only treatment options that can help prevent further bone loss. The posts stimulate the surrounding bone, just like natural dental roots, helping to keep your jaw stable and healthy. Compared to traditional dentures, your restoration will also fit comfortably within your mouth without slipping or shifting, so you can enjoy all your favorite foods and smile confidently.

Who is a Candidate?

You may be a good candidate for an implant-supported denture if you are:

  • Currently wearing conventional dentures
  • Unsatisfied with your current conventional denture
  • Missing a significant amount of teeth in your upper or lower jaw
  • Seeking a long-term solution to replacing your missing teeth
  • Undergoing extensive tooth extraction

The best candidates also have good oral and physical health, with no signs of advanced gum disease or bone loss. It is also recommended that you do not smoke, since the habit can inhibit healing and lead to failure of the dental implants.

Implant-supported restorations are the only treatment options that can help prevent further bone loss.

To begin the treatment process, Dr. Ahlbrecht will use state-of-the-art technology to ensure your jawbone is healthy enough to withstand the procedure. If bone loss is detected, he may first recommend a bone grafting procedure which requires an additional six to nine months of healing time.

The Treatment Process

On the day of your surgery, Dr. Ahlbrecht will administer sedation and local anesthetic to keep you comfortable and fully relaxed throughout the procedure. Our practice uses x-rays and advanced imaging scans to ensure optimal placement of each post. After the implants have been secured in your jaw, you will typically receive a temporary restoration. After the procedure, you will undergo a three to six month healing period known as osseointegration. This healing process is crucial to the overall success rate of your implants. Throughout this time, Dr. Ahlbrecht will monitor your recovery to ensure the implants are fusing with the surrounding tissue.

Once you have fully healed, a second surgery will be performed to attach abutments to the tops of your implants. These small attachments provide an easy, yet durable connection for your permanent implant-retained denture. During this procedure, an impression will be taken for the dental lab to use in creating your customized restoration. After about two weeks, the device will be attached to your implants and you will be on your way to a beautifully restored smile.
