What is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is the practice of using medication to help keep patients calm and relaxed throughout their dental procedure. At North Meridian Dental Excellence, we offer three different types.

Nitrous oxide may be better known to you as laughing gas. It’s administered nasally throughout the length of your procedure. Laughing gas takes effect very quickly and wears off very quickly, meaning you’ll be able to drive yourself to and from your appointment. You’ll be relaxed throughout the procedure, but alert enough to answer questions from the dental team if you need to

Oral conscious sedation is the next step up. It’s administered in the form of a prescribed pill that you’ll take about an hour before your procedure. You’ll be relaxed enough that you may fall asleep or forget parts of the procedure. This is sometimes used in conjunction with laughing gas. The effects can take a while to wear off, so you’ll need a ride to and from your appointment.

Last, we offer general anesthesia. This is given through an IV and will keep you asleep throughout the entire procedure. It’s usually used for things like oral surgery, placement of dental implants, and intense restorative dentistry procedures. You’ll need a ride to and from your appointment as well.

Sedation Dentistry Benefits

As mentioned, sedation is ideal for patients that suffer from dental anxiety. The fear is strong enough for some that they avoid regular dental visits altogether. This can lead to serious dental problems later on. Sedation dentistry ensures that they can get regular care and be comfortable throughout the appointment.

Sedation also makes it easier to perform multiple treatments in one session. This is also convenient for those with dental anxiety, as it means fewer times they have to come into the office. Dr. Ahlbrecht is also able to perform more quickly when patients are sedated. It’s pain-free for patients and your muscles are relaxed to avoid a gag reflex, especially if you have a bad one.

Lastly, sedation is ideal for children and people with certain medical conditions that make it impossible to sit still for a long period of time. We want to make sure you get the dental care you need. Sedation dentistry makes it easier for both patients and staff.
