The words dental crown used to mean two appointments, temporary restorations, and a long wait in between. Patients would leave the office with a numb mouth, a fragile temporary crown, and instructions to eat only soft foods for two whole weeks. Then came the call that the permanent crown had arrived, followed by another round of numbing and bonding. That process worked, but it was not exactly convenient. Same-day crowns change all of that.

What Is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. The fancy name aside, it is simply a system that lets dentists design, create, and place a permanent crown in one appointment.
The technology has three main parts:
- A special camera takes digital images of the tooth.
- Software on a computer helps design the perfect restoration. A
- milling machine carves the crown out of a solid block of ceramic right there in the office.
The whole process takes about an hour to ninety minutes. Patients could walk in with a damaged tooth and walk out with a fully restored smile.
Step One: Getting a Clear Picture
The first step is also the easiest. Instead of goopy impression material that can trigger a gag reflex, Dr. Ahlbrecht or another team member uses a small handheld camera to capture digital images of the tooth. The camera travels around the mouth and creates a highly detailed 3D model on a computer screen.
Patients see their own tooth appear in vivid detail. This is often the moment when everything clicks into place. Understanding why a crown is needed becomes much easier when staring at a clear picture of the problem.
Step Two: Designing the Crown
This is where the dentist’s skill and training really matter. Using special software, Dr. Ahlbrecht designs a crown that matches the shape, size, and color of the surrounding teeth. He pays close attention to how the new crown will contact neighboring teeth and how it will fit into the patient’s bite.
The software even allows for adjustments to make sure the crown will not feel too high or too bulky. Patients can see the virtual crown on the screen and understand exactly what the final result will look like.
Step Three: Milling and Bonding
Once the design is complete, the digital file gets sent to a small milling machine sitting in the office. The machine carves the crown out of a single block of high-quality ceramic. The block starts as a solid rectangle and slowly takes the shape of a tooth as tiny burs remove material.
The whole carving process usually takes about twenty minutes. Patients can sit back and relax. There is no temporary crown to wear, no return visit to schedule, and no waiting for a dental lab to ship something back.
After the crown comes out of the milling machine, Dr. Ahlbrecht checks the fit, makes any tiny adjustments, and bonds the permanent crown into place. Patients could leave the same day with their treatment completely finished.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Same-Day Crown?
